Tebow Ad: Where Is The Controversy?

8 Feb, 2010  |  Written by Matthew C. Keegan  |  under Movie Reviews

Super Bowl XLIV is in the history books, with the New Orleans Saints vanquishing the Indianapolis Colts, 31 to 17.

As with every Super Bowl the commercials are nearly as entertaining as the game itself as marketing professionals seek to outdo one another by offering what they hope is a memorable clip for their product. Indeed, with more than 90 million US viewers tuned in, paying 2.5 million for a thirty-second spot is not as terrible as it sounds.

Today, a lot of people who came out against sponsor Focus on the Family (FOTF) and the Tebow ad have egg on their faces. I am showing a lot of restraint as I write this, but the hype from Planned Parenthood and their ilk proves that some people love to jump to conclusions.

In case you missed the ad, I have included it here for your review. Controversial? Hardly. Inspiring, cute, and fun? Yes, absolutely.

My thoughts? Some people have an ax to grind. Pam and Tim Tebow are certainly not named among them.

I actually laughed out loud when I finally saw the ad. NOW is so out of touch with most women today it is amazing. I think this statement by their president says it all – “The goal of the Focus on the Family ad is not to empower women. It’s to create a climate in which Roe v. Wade can be overturned,” O’Neill said. “There are always going to be women who need abortions. In this country, one in three women will have an abortion.” [ 1 in 3! scary and shocking]

“Focus on the Family has cynically set it up so they can say anyone who disagrees with airing this ad is disrespecting one woman and her choice. NOW respects every woman’s right to plan her own family and insists our laws do the same,” said O’Neill.

You will never get them to change their story. And you will never get them to follow Sarah’s suggestion – ” “NOW is looking at the pro-life issue backwards.”

“My message to these groups who are inexplicably offended by a pro-woman, pro-child, pro-life message airing during the Super Bowl: please concentrate on empowering women, help with efforts to prevent unexpected pregnancies, stay consistent with your message that for too long women have been made to feel like sex objects in our ‘modern’ culture and that we can expect better in 2010.”

It really is becoming a time where right is wrong and wrong is right when it suits you. Except for the few who know the truth! Thank God for the Sarah Palin’s of the world.

Dominique, I just visited NOW’s site and had a chuckle with the way they were stirring people up to oppose the ad. As if they even saw it. I admire FOTF for their brilliant strategy as outlined by Jen’s comment which follows this one. It seems that jumping to conclusions makes people look silly!

The reason there was so much controversy was because they didn’t preview the ad so no one knew what it was going to say. Focus on the Family went on a press tour touting the fact they got their ad in the Super Bowl while other ads that were also considered advocacy ads did not. Had they simply previewed the ad no one would have cared, and Focus on the Family would have gotten no press. Brilliant strategy actually.

Thanks, Jen. I did not know FOTF had been touting their ad that way. You are right: ginning up the press got the requisite media attention; it turns out that the Tebow ad was the most anticipated one of the game.
