GodTube Becomes Tangle, Expands Purpose

Submitted by on February 11, 2009 – 2:12 pm7 Comments

Yesterday I was heading over to GodTube — my first visit there in months — and quickly realized that GodTube is no more. Well, at least the name isn’t.

bible studyAccording to the company’s young CEO, Jason Illian, GodTube was changed to Tangle in a bid to help expand it beyond video file sharing. On the home page of the website Jason explained the changes in a video where he shared his opinion that Christians “…need to be tangled up in their faith, pursuing a Christian angle with all that we do, with every word that we speak, with every action that we take, with every person that we meet.”

Essentially, we are to take our faith outside of the church doors. Supposedly, Tangle has been designed as a tool to help Christians do just that, at least that is what is being implied by Jason.

Going Beyond GodTube

Tangle offers a lot more than what GodTube offered including a prayer wall where visitors can post and share petitions, search the Bible in many different languages and versions, post detailed personal profile information, take advantage of friend sharing opportunities, perform photo uploading and more.

Besides offering individual pages, Tangle provides Church, Ministry, Band and Group pages. Every service on their site is free not unlike Facebook.

There is one similarity between Tangle and Word Journey that visitors should notice: neither site offers ads. I know that Tangle has received funding from a number of different private investors including Norm Miller of Interstate Batteries. In addition, the site reportedly received $30 million in funding from GLG Partners, a hedge fund investor. Clearly, Tangle has taken the GodTube idea big time and the new site reflects these changes.

Do We Need Another Facebook?

I’m not sure that a site separate from Facebook is needed, but with more than one hundred social media sites out there, having a place where Christians can gather is a natural move. I haven’t signed up yet, but I will keep my eye on Tangle to see where it goes and, most importantly, how and if God will use it.
