World Cup, Amazing Faith

Submitted by on May 28, 2010 – 11:19 am2 Comments

Christian athletes will participate in FIFA 2010.

The most significant event in sports will take place next month, the World Cup soccer (football) championship. Every four years more than 3 billion people from across the globe tune in, enjoying a month long celebration of their favorite sport.

South Africa will be this year’s host, with games played in the middle of a mild African winter. Games will begin on June 11 and conclude on July 11 with 32 countries including the United States participating. Lots of people will be finding it hard to concentrate on much else while the games are taking place, but one thing is certain: a handful of current and former athletes are keeping their minds fixed on things above.

Timely DVD

The Christian organization, Athletes In Action, has developed a DVD focusing on the personal stories of six soccer athletes, followers of Jesus Christ whose play on the field is well known, but whose personal testimony may not be. “The Prize: Chasing the Dream,” is a 26-minute film featuring the testimonies of the following athletes:

Lucio – Captain of the Brazilian National Team and 2002 World Cup winner

Kaka – 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year and member of the 2002 winning team

Marcos Senna – Member of Spanish National Team, currently ranked number one in the world

Nicola Legrotagglie – Member of the Italian National Team, currently ranked fourth in the world

Cyrille Domoraud – Retired captain of the Ivorian National Team (Ivory Coast), whom he led to their first World Cup appearance in 2006

Oscar Ewolo -Captain of the Congolese team and 12-year professional athlete

Kaka Testimony

“I’m not talking about a ‘fairy-tale God.’ I’m talking about a God that I experience and who has changed my life and who changes and transforms me every day in a very real way,” said Kaka, star striker for Brazil and FC Real Madrid in the Spanish La Liga.  “Because of this, everything I do has a direction and a purpose…This is what I believe gives me the motivation to strive toward my dreams.”

Shawn Keith of Athletes In Action helped develop and produce the film which he believes will have a profound impact on viewers. AIA has long worked with athletes and coaches to provide a platform whereby people can talk about their faith in Jesus Christ, reaching out to other athletes and the community in the process.
