Are You Stupid? — Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

Dunce

The Book of Proverbs has always been an enjoyable read for me. I like the meat found in every verse, freestanding pearls of wisdom to contemplate throughout the day.

When I was a young Christian I attended church with someone who used to read the Book of Proverbs throughout the year, all 31 chapters each month. He could quote scores of proverbs, but I never liked it when he would direct specific verses my way. Yes, a timely rebuke as warranted can certainly be helpful, but encouraging me as I make my journey has a much more profound impact on my walk with Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 12:1 is one proverb that is very direct and to the point. It is also one of those proverbs that can also make you wince: really, who loves to be disciplined? Children don’t want it, Godly parents must do it, but the believer who is corrected by God is actually blessed. Discipline builds character and conforms us to be more Christ-like.

I don’t know of anybody who wants to be known as stupid. The word is biting, not very kind, but it is very appropriate for the person who rejects the truth especially when it is plainly shown to him that his ways are wrong.

Are you stupid or do you love discipline which leads to knowledge?
