Enduring Mercies
One of the distinguishing hallmarks of Christianity is forgiveness. We believe that God’s mercies and grace are boundless, able to save the chiefest of all sinners. There isn’t a thing we can do to earn forgiveness as Christ’s death was the perfect atonement for our sins.
God understands our frailties having been subject to the same temptations and trials through His Son, Jesus Christ. God manifested Himself in the flesh in order to provide a way for mankind to have access to Him and to receive His mercy.
There are some people who are wrongfully under the impression that they are beyond God’s reach or that God is a god who doesn’t care about them personally. I find that Psalm 136 is a wonderful illustration of just how deep God’s mercy is. Every single verse ends with the statement, “and His mercies endure forever.”
v.2 Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever.
v.6 To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever.
v.13 To Him who divided the Red Sea in two, For His mercy endures forever.
v.23 Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever.
In all, there are 26 reminders (or verses) repeating what we need to hear: His mercies continue with us always.
You may think that you are beyond God’s mercy, but you aren’t. I am not advocating that people freely sin, but if you are trapped in sin there is a way out — through the cross of Jesus Christ.
Indeed, his mercy does endure forever!
